Inaugural Post: A Shift in Mindset Today…A Future Reimagined

 February 3, 2020

Welcome to the first posting of the Tiger Performance Institute blog!  My goal is to bring valuable content each week you can act on, to change your health trajectory.

The work at Tiger Performance Institute can be explained best by this formula:

Performance = Skill – Interference

I can’t take credit for this idea, Dr. Anthony M. Avellino, MD and pediatric neurosurgeon coined this phrase at a meeting I was in and I asked for his permission to use it.  Ok, credit attributed, lets keep going.

First, performance is a personal decision.  Not everyone is looking to be an Olympian, so what does performance mean?

For the athlete, executive, professional, or entrepreneur it likely does relate to elite performance, getting that last 1-2% to compete at one’s best.  For the 8-year old struggling with ADHD, performance is being focused, rather than disruptive in class.  For some professionals perhaps its facing challenges at work and balancing all the responsibilities of a family, managing stress or overcoming anxiousness as their definition of better performance.

The key term in the equation is Interference.  Webster’s Dictionary uses terms like obstruction, hindering, or confusion.  Interference is anything that prevents or limits you from being the best version of yourself.  It literally works against the skills you bring to a situation, leading to declining performance.

So, as you hopefully read this blog each week, you will learn how you can reduce or eliminate interference in your life and see your performance improve.  The goal is to teach you how to reduce your interference so your skills to dominate.  When they do, performance soars.

The exciting fact is science is advancing rapidly in neuroscience and human performance.   The result is we are gaining effective tools and strategies which can enable you to change your future.  The key is your mindset.

Do you believe you can make the changes in your habits to reduce your interference and experience better performance?  Do you believe you can change your health trajectory?

A landmark ten-year study by the MacArthur Foundation revealed that 70% of physical aging and approximately 50% of mental aging is determined by lifestyle choices we make every day.  What this means is we are not hopelessly assigned a sentence of steady decline as we age.  We can make choices which reduce the risk of disease and injury.  We can make choices to invest in strategies that enhance our physical and mental skills as we age.

It’s a bit scary to think we have this kind of control. It’s also empowering with the right mindset.  These strategies and choices can lead to more years of good health and improved performance.

This blog will unpack more good research like this and take a science and data-driven approach to unlocking improved human performance and longer health-spans.  That last term simply means the number of years you are healthy.

Given the research we’ve armed ourselves with at Tiger Performance Institute, we believe it points clearly to you having the ability to lengthen the number of healthy years you live.  To borrow a book title, you can learn things that will improve your odds of living long and dying short.  We aren’t promising a longer life, just the potential for more life in the years you have

I hope you continue the journey with us!
